Job Description

This is a full-time, non exempt position scheduled to work 40 hours per week, 52 weeks per year. Monday through Friday
3 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.

Maintains, inspects, operates, and repairs all campus and buildings' electrical distribution circuits, lighting fixtures, electrical equipment control components and electrical safety devices, including calibration of related components, at Babson College; adjusts those electrical systems as necessary for optimal performance to maintain compliance with operating guidelines, state/local building codes and other government regulations by performing the following essential duties.

• Operate, adjust, and inspect all campus electrical distribution circuits, lighting fixtures, electrical equipment control components and electrical safety devices, including instrumentation and sensors, to detect hazards, malfunctions, the need for adjustment, and/or replacement of such items as thermostats, air conditioners, smoke detectors, and other similar or related types of equipment; monitor all electrical systems' operations and parameters and make the necessary corrections and adjustments to meet the buildings' safety/security operating guidelines.
• Maintain and repair/replace all campus electrical distribution circuits, lighting fixtures, electrical equipment control components and electrical safety devices, including instrumentation and sensors, to detect hazards, malfunctions, the need for adjustment, and/or replacement of such items as thermostats, air conditioners, smoke detectors, and other similar or related types of equipment.
• Analyze and perform diagnostic testing and analysis of campus electrical distribution circuits, lighting fixtures, electrical equipment control components and electrical safety devices associated with all buildings, to isolate and identify the root causes of systems' failure or inadequate performance; develop interim and permanent solutions for identified systems' failures; participate in campus audits to determine optimal operating procedures and develop new system(s) control strategies.
• Document all repairs, maintenance and comments on assigned service work order slips; record routine system(s) operating statistics, building operating schedules, responses to equipment alarms, maintenance work performed and other pertinent information in applicable equipment records and databases; collect and maintain files of documents and diagrams generated from field investigations of fire alarm, door access, and security systems.
• Act as a work site coordinator for executing work involving other in-house technicians and contractors, to keep systems functioning within original design operating parameters; recommend repairs or different treatments to any and all electrical distribution, lighting and safety systems at Babson College.
• Balance single shop work assignments with present workloads in coordination and support of the Service Response Manager and Trades Supervisor's work plans.
• Respond to and correct deficiencies identified on assigned service order work slips, executing new or modified installations to minimize waste of materials, to provide access for future maintenance and to avoid unsightly, hazardous and unreliable repairs, while meeting manufacturers' installation specifications and local codes/requirements.
• Provide assistance to other department trade group members as needed in the completion of work tasks; provide appropriate support in major campus events such as commencement and opening of school; participate in snow removal activities as needed to maintain campus operations.
• Assumes additional responsibilities as required.

Position Knowledge/Skills & Abilities Requirements:
• At least 2-3 years of related experience and/or training or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Must be able to function well in a team/community environment, displaying common courtesies and politeness; frequently interacts with students, teachers, co-workers and administrators.
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, material safety data sheets (MSDS), mechanical drawings, operating, maintenance, repair, installation and procedure instructions or manuals.
• Ability to write routine instructions, fill out equipment logs and provide descriptions of equipment problems and likely solutions.
• Ability to speak effectively to describe and explain specific problems and operating requirements of mechanical and plumbing systems to students, faculty, staff and contractors.
• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
• Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
• Ability to order replacement parts and stock needed to perform daily work tasks.

Physical Environment:
• Regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions.
• Frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts; high precarious places; hazardous chemicals; outside weather conditions and extreme heat.
• Occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles.
• Usually moderate noise level.
• Regularly required to work extended hours and participate in an after hours emergency call-back program.

B. Physical Demands:
• Operates a motor vehicle on a daily basis.
• Regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, feel, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
• Frequently required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, talk or hear, and smell.
• Occasionally required to sit.
• Regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
• Regularly climb and/or balance up to 10 feet and frequently climb and or balance up to 25 feet.
• Regular use of close vision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Additional Experience, Skills & Abilities:
• Criteria for advancement to next level: Four to six years of related experience, Massachusetts Master Electrician License or acceptable equivalent experience, recommendation by supervisor; acceptable background check; must be in good standing with no documented disciplinary actions for previous two years.
